Dan Murtagh

Lecturer

Dan Murtagh is a Melbourne-based music producer, mix engineer, and award-winning film sound designer with over 20 years of industry experience. Originally from Adelaide, Dan completed his degree at the Elder Conservatorium before relocating to Melbourne in 2011 to join the team at Sing Sing Recording Studios - one of Australia's most respected recording facilities. Those years working alongside seasoned professionals shaped a practical, instinct-driven approach to sound that continues to define his work today.

Dan works across music and film, with credits spanning feature films, short films, television pilots, and documentary projects. His work has been recognised at international festivals including the Southern California International Film Festival, Hollywood Dreamz, and Action on Film, earning wins for Best Feature Film, Best Drama, and Best Documentary Short across multiple productions.

Dan has been a lecturer at Collarts since 2016, teaching across the Recording Studio Techniques and Audio Production programs. His classes cover microphone technique, signal flow, recording, mixing, and post-production - progressing students from DAW fundamentals through to full multitrack production. The emphasis is always on practical, hands-on learning: students spend time in the studio, make decisions in real sessions, and develop the kind of listening skills and critical thinking that carry over into professional work. He also publishes industry articles and free mixing tools at danmurtagh.com, which students can access alongside their coursework.
